Lesson Objective: Students will identify vegetables containing
phytochemicals and gain understanding of their importance in fighting disease.
Lesson Plans developed by the Leafy Greens Council will help students
understand the nutritional benefits found in Phytochemicals and increase
their interest in trying these vegetables in their own diets. Included
are: Language Arts Lesson using a Shared Reading or Read Aloud piece as
well as reading comprehension skills. Social Studies lessons that involve
following directions and mapping skills, plus math word problems. Included
is an assessment piece and culminating activities for including families
in the learning experience. Four Activities that are adaptable for all
grades and for center activities. They include: Leafy Greens Bingo (vocabulary
recognition,) Cruciferous Crusaders Cancer Fighting Search (science and
vocabulary study,) Leafy Greens Maze-From farmer to Table (Social Studies
connection,) All Star Eating Habits (Reading and vocabulary recognition.)
Invent a “Phyto Warrior” Using the outline of the broccoli have students
design a character that fights off disease in the human body. Have the
students give the character a name. This could also be a writing activity
for students having them
describe the creature and what it does, physical features, etc.
6. Try a cooking activity with your students using an attached recipe
or one of your own. Send a recipe home with information learned from these
lessons.

Make Your Own Biodegradable Plastic From Corn
Directions:
1. Place a tablespoon of cornstarch in a paper cup or plastic bag.
2. Add 2 drops corn oil to the cornstarch.
3. Add a tablespoon of water to oil and cornstarch.
4. Stir.
5. Add 2 drops food coloring to the mixture and stir.
Scientific Observations:
1. What do you notice about your biodegradable plastic?
2. Is your biodegradable plastic the same as other students' plastic.
3. What could you make with this plastic if you let it harden?
4.What products can you think of that are made from a similar plastic?
Extension:
Microwave your plastic for 20-25 seconds on high.
