This website serves many purposes. It is our
medium to communicate with the world at large to let others know that we
exist. It is our the tool we use to share our resources with others.
We have
grouped all of our teaching related information under the "Teaching
Resources" heading.
Rather than develop
yet another curriculum, our program connects
state curriculum standards with hands-on garden and nature trail lessons
that are tailored to the unique educational requirements in each grade
from kindergarten through fourth grade. From there, we develop a
calendar that integrates the seasonal needs of the gardens (planting and
care) with the curriculum map that shows when related topics will be
taught in each grade. The Teacher
Resources link includes all of our detailed lesson plans,
our spring and fall gardening calendars (we have connected all of our
lessons with the needs of the garden as well as state standards
and our school's curriculum map), and our
communications with teachers, staff and volunteer garden coordinators
regarding what the classes are doing in the gardens each week. The
are continually being added to and improved.
We have not
copyrighted anything on this website. All of the material is there
for you to use. All we ask is that you
e-mail us and let us know
what you are using and how you are using it. We would love to hear
about what you are doing in your program. Send photos and we will
include them on our website, with a link to your site if you have one. Of course, we would appreciate credit wherever it
is due.
Our gardens
are located in Southwestern Ohio, zone 6, where we serve all of
Loveland's 1,800 K- 4th
grade students. Information regarding planting
and harvesting times are based on this fact. Some of our gardens
are located in courtyards that are surrounded on 2-3 sides by the school
building. This creates mini temperate zones that allow us to
winter over plants that normally do not make it in zone 5. Another
thing that is a bit unusual about our location is that though the soil
on hills around us is clay, our gardens, located in an old river bottom
area, are not.
This website, like our gardens, are in a constant
stage of flux. Pages are uploaded as we go so you will see
evidence of old and new versions and as with this page, some that are
incomplete. |
